On October 20, 2009 the staff at Bicycle Times unearthed 100 copies of issue #1 from our storage spot in California. This issue was previously sold out, so we made the found copies available through our website with the plan of donating $5 from the sale of each magazine to the League of American Bicyclists.
To our delight, on November 24th we were out of the issue again. It took just over four weeks to sell through the 100 copies, effectively raising $500 for bicycle advocacy, awareness, and education. This is a strong demonstration for the love and belief we all share for the bicycle and the potential it has to regain its status as a viable means of transportation, while simultaneously keeping us all healthy and happy.
The money donated by Bicycle Times on your behalf will have a direct effect in Washington as well. The more funds the League has, the more time they can spend lobbying for pro-bicycle legislation. In the past, lobbying has resulted in increased funding for bicycle projects in federal transportation bills. This spreads to more cycling infrastructure, more rails-to-trails, bike lanes on city streets, and other policies and programs across the United States.
With the donation Bicycle Times Magazine becomes recognized as a corporate member of the League of American Bicyclists. As a result we will be able to extend our cycling hand and reach a broader audience of the cycling community. That is something we can all benefit from.
