This summer, Focus the Nation will select two fellows and award one $10,000 grant to students with the best ideas for helping America overcome its dependence on coal. In addition, from September 26th through 30th, recipients will participate in the 2009 Climate Ride bicycle ride from NYC to DC to showcase their projects in workshops in towns along the route. Then in December, with support from the Danish Embassy, the recipients will travel to Copenhagen, Denmark to present their projects to the international communities participating in the COP15 climate treaty negotiations.
The following description of the Focus Roots Fellowships comes from the Focus the Nation website, where you can find additional information about the organization, official rules and application instructions:
Across the country, communities are trapped in a pollution-based economy. And we are all asking the same questions: How do we do it? How do we transition? What are the obstacles in building a clean energy future?
In order to accelerate the transition away from energy sources like coal, and toward a just and prosperous clean energy future, every town needs stronger roots and deeper community engagement. And the deeper these clean energy roots reach throughout your community, the faster we can move toward utilizing renewable energy systems and redefining prosperity.
To help America overcome its dependence on cheap dirty coal, and to
support innovative young leaders in building communities that want to
be a part of a clean energy future, Focus the Nation is pleased to
announce the second year of The Focus Roots Fellowships: "Coal and the Road to Copenhagen."
