New site chronicles cycling fatalities
Earlier this year, the League of American Bicyclists launched a site called Every Cyclist Counts. A grim and sobering chronicle, it tracks bicycle fatalities and serves as a memorial to friends and family members who passed away too soon.
But more than just looking back into the past, the project will use the data learned from what caused those fatalities to look ahead and better understand how to prevent them in the future—both crashes and other types of fatalities, on and off-road.
It also hopes to hold a spotlight on authorities by following up and remaining engaged with each of these instances, long after the media attention has moved on to other things, in the hope that the response from police, the justice system, and the media can be improved over time.
