Scott SUB 10 Solution - First Impressions

The long, grey winter is a little brighter for me now that I'm on my new test rig, the neon green Scott SUB 10 Solution. SUB stands for "Speed Utility Bike" and the 10 Solution is one of seven SUB siblings (say that 10 times) all designed for commuting, trips to the store, and speed.

The SUB 10 Solution is spec'd with solid, low maintenance components like Shimano BR-M575 hydraulic disc brakes and the Shimano Alfine 8-speed internal gear hub. This is my first experience riding a bike equipped with the 8-speed Alfine hub, and I've got to say, I was surprised and impressed at how smoothly it shifted. It also provided a good range of gears for around-town riding - even a town with good-sized hills.

Adding real utility to the SUB 10 Solution, Scott provides a variety of frame and fork mounts for fenders and rear rack. One of my personal favorite frame accommodations is the chainstay disc mount.

They even have a matching Urban-Kit, featuring a rear rack and fender system. Our test bike did not include these options, but I'm told they are on the way. I'll share pics when I get them.

Due to weather and road conditions around here, I was forced to swap out the stock Continental Sport Contact 700x32c tires for the beefier 700x40c Schwalbe Marathon Extremes. There was plenty of frame clearance for the larger tires and if the need arises, it looks like the frame could accomodate even bigger tires. But I'm sure once the roads clear up around here, the Conti's will be back on.
